Mature trees are often among the most valuable and defining features of a landscape. They provide shade, privacy, beauty, wildlife habitat, stormwater benefits, and a sense of permanence that may take decades—or generations—to develop.
Landscape improvements can enhance how a property looks and functions. New planting beds, patios, walkways, retaining walls, irrigation systems, outdoor lighting, lawn renovations, and drainage improvements may all add value to a property.
However, even projects intended to improve the landscape can unintentionally affect established trees.
Excavation, soil compaction, changes in grade, root cutting, altered drainage, and repeated equipment traffic may influence the environment supporting a mature tree. Because many important roots are hidden below ground, damage may occur without an immediate or obvious change in the canopy.
Protecting mature trees does not mean avoiding landscape improvements. It means understanding where roots grow and planning projects in ways that reduce unnecessary disturbance.
Mature Trees Depend on More Than the Area Near the Trunk
A tree’s root system extends outward through the surrounding soil.
Many actively absorbing roots are relatively close to the soil surface and may extend well beyond the edge of the canopy. These roots depend on adequate soil pore space for oxygen and water movement and contribute to nutrient uptake, energy storage, and overall tree function.
Large roots near the trunk also contribute to structural support.
Because roots are underground, it may be easy to assume that work occurring several feet from the trunk will not affect the tree. However, excavation, grading, equipment traffic, and changes in soil conditions may influence roots throughout a much larger area.
The visible canopy is only one part of the tree. The surrounding soil is part of its growing environment and should be considered during landscape planning.

Improving a landscape and protecting mature trees do not have to be competing goals. The best results often begin by considering existing trees before deciding where excavation, grading, hardscaping, and new plantings will occur.
Plan Around Important Trees Before Work Begins
Tree preservation is most effective when considered during the design phase rather than after the project layout has already been finalized.
Before beginning a landscape project, consider:
Which trees are priorities for preservation
The species, size, condition, and expected longevity of each tree
Where patios, walkways, retaining walls, planting beds, and other features are proposed
Where excavation may occur
How equipment and materials will enter the property
Where soil, stone, mulch, and other materials will be stored
Whether irrigation or drainage patterns may change
How much undisturbed rooting area will remain
A design that looks appropriate on paper may create conflicts when existing roots, soil conditions, drainage, and equipment access are considered.
Evaluating important trees early may allow landscape features to be shifted, resized, or installed differently before changes become difficult or expensive.
Minimize Excavation and Root Disturbance
Many landscape improvements involve digging.
Potential sources of root disturbance include:
Patios and walkways
Retaining walls
Landscape edging
Irrigation and drainage systems
Outdoor lighting
New planting beds
Fence posts
Steps and outdoor structures
The effect of excavation depends on the number and size of roots affected, distance from the trunk, tree species and condition, soil type, and amount of undisturbed rooting area that remains.
Visible surface roots are also part of the tree and should not automatically be viewed as landscape obstacles.
Avoid:
Cutting or grinding major roots to improve mowing
Rototilling beneath the canopy
Cutting roots to install edging or maintain a predetermined planting layout
Removing large amounts of soil around established roots
Covering roots with thick layers of new soil
Rather than removing or hiding roots, it may be more appropriate to adjust the landscape around them. Expanding a mulch area, changing the shape of a planting bed, rerouting a walkway, or shifting individual plants may reduce unnecessary disturbance.
When excavation near a valuable tree is unavoidable, evaluating the site before work begins may help identify options for reducing root damage.
Avoid Major Changes in Soil Grade
Adding or removing soil may significantly change conditions within the root zone.
Deep layers of new soil can affect oxygen movement, water infiltration, soil moisture, and root function. Removing soil may expose, injure, or sever roots that are growing near the surface.
Avoid burying the trunk or root flare.
The root flare is the area where the trunk widens and transitions into the major structural roots. It should generally remain visible and should not be covered with soil, mulch, or landscape materials.
Raised planting beds, retaining walls, lawn renovations, and regrading projects may alter conditions around established trees even when no immediate canopy changes are visible.
Protect Soil From Equipment and Material Storage
Landscape projects may involve skid steers, mini excavators, compact loaders, trucks, trailers, and repeated wheelbarrow traffic.
Heavy equipment can compact soil and reduce the pore spaces needed for oxygen and water movement.
Compacted soil may:
Reduce water infiltration
Limit oxygen movement
Restrict future root growth
Increase surface runoff
Alter drainage
Make it more difficult for roots to access moisture and nutrients
Avoid using the area around mature trees for equipment access, vehicle parking, material storage, or repeated traffic—particularly when the soil is wet.
Planning access routes and storage areas before work begins can reduce unnecessary disturbance.
Consider Hardscapes, Irrigation, and Drainage Together
Patios, walkways, retaining walls, irrigation systems, and drainage improvements may affect trees in several ways.
Installation may require excavation, compacted base materials, grade changes, or equipment traffic. Completed features may also change how water enters and moves through the soil.
Before installation, consider:
How much excavation will be required
Whether large roots may be encountered
How much rooting area will remain open
Whether water will be redirected toward or away from the tree
Whether drainage conditions may change
Whether future root growth may affect the hardscape
Whether the feature can be shifted or redesigned
New landscape plants and established trees may have different watering needs. Irrigation designed for turf or ornamental plants may not provide appropriate soil conditions for mature trees.
Flexible designs may allow existing roots to remain undisturbed. In some situations, changing the route of a walkway, adjusting the shape of a patio, or using installation methods that require less excavation may reduce conflicts.
Use Mulch Thoughtfully
Proper mulch can help moderate soil temperature, retain moisture, reduce competition from turf, protect soil from repeated mowing traffic, and add organic material as it decomposes.
However, more mulch is not always better.
Avoid piling mulch against the trunk or creating a mulch volcano. Excessive mulch depth may retain moisture against the bark, hide the root flare, and alter conditions within the root zone.
Mulch should generally be spread broadly and kept away from direct contact with the trunk.
Protect the Trunk During Landscape Work
Landscape equipment can damage bark and the living tissues beneath it.
Potential sources of injury include mowers, string trimmers, skid steers, mini excavators, trailers, tools, and repeated material handling.
Avoid attaching ropes, cables, signs, fencing, or equipment directly to the tree.
If equipment will operate nearby, establish adequate clearance and clearly communicate which trees are priorities for protection.
Trunk protection may reduce the chance of direct impact, but it does not protect the roots or surrounding soil. Root-zone protection remains important.
Supporting the Soil After Landscape Disturbance
A tree affected by landscape work does not automatically need fertilizer.
Canopy thinning, reduced growth, or leaf discoloration may be associated with root disturbance, soil compaction, changes in drainage, drought stress, or other conditions that fertilizer alone will not correct.
Depending on the tree and site, recommendations may include:
Monitoring
Supplemental watering
Proper mulch
Soil evaluation
Soil improvement
Root-zone management
Corrective pruning
Further investigation
When appropriate, UFT’s Deep Root Feeding program may be used to support the root-zone environment rather than simply stimulate rapid aboveground growth.
The program includes organic matter, biochar, humates, beneficial biological components, and carefully selected nutrients intended to support soil structure, moisture and nutrient retention, biological activity, and long-term root-zone function.
Deep Root Feeding does not restore roots that have been removed or immediately correct severe soil compaction. Treatment should be based on actual site conditions and used as part of a broader management approach when appropriate.
Monitor Trees After Landscaping
Changes related to root disturbance, soil compaction, grade changes, or altered drainage may not become visible immediately.
After a major landscape project, watch for:
Canopy thinning
Increasing branch dieback
Reduced annual growth
Smaller-than-normal leaves
Unusual leaf color
Premature fall color or early leaf drop
Changes in soil moisture or drainage
Changes around the root flare
Photographs taken before, during, and after the project may help document gradual changes.
When Professional Evaluation Is Useful
Consider involving an arborist before a landscaping project when:
Mature or high-value trees are located near proposed work
Excavation may occur beneath or near the canopy
Patios, retaining walls, walkways, irrigation, or drainage systems are being planned
Significant amounts of soil will be added or removed
Surface roots conflict with the proposed design
Heavy equipment will operate near important trees
Existing tree health or structural condition is uncertain
An arborist may help evaluate tree condition, identify potential conflicts, recommend practical protection measures, and prioritize trees for preservation.
Early planning may provide options that are no longer available after roots have been cut or site conditions have been altered.

Landscape improvements and mature-tree preservation can often work together.
Protecting a tree means considering more than its trunk. The roots, soil, root flare, drainage, and surrounding growing environment all contribute to long-term health and stability.
The best time to consider tree protection is before excavation begins, before equipment enters the root zone, and before the design becomes difficult to change.
A mature tree may have taken generations to develop. Including it in the planning process can help preserve its value as the surrounding landscape changes.
