How proper mulching can protect the root zone, support healthy soil, and reduce avoidable stress around landscape trees.
Why Mulching Matters
Mulch is one of the simplest and most useful tools available for supporting the soil environment around landscape trees.
When applied correctly, organic mulch can help protect the soil, moderate temperature and moisture conditions, reduce competition from turfgrass, limit damage from lawn equipment, and gradually return organic matter to the soil as it decomposes.
In many ways, mulch helps recreate some of the conditions naturally found on a forest floor. However, mulch is beneficial only when it is applied appropriately.
Excessive depth, mulch piled against the trunk, buried root flares, and repeated additions without evaluating the existing layer may create new concerns rather than improve the growing environment.
The goal is simple: create a broad, moderate layer that protects and supports the soil while allowing the trunk and root flare to remain visible.
Mulch Supports More Than Appearance
Mulch is often installed because it creates a clean, finished appearance in the landscape. Its greatest benefits, however, occur within the soil and root zone.
An appropriate layer of organic mulch may help:
Moderate changes in soil temperature
Reduce moisture loss from the soil surface
Improve water infiltration
Protect soil from erosion and surface disturbance
Reduce competition from turfgrass and weeds
Limit soil compaction caused by repeated foot traffic
Reduce the risk of mower and string-trimmer damage
Gradually contribute organic matter as it decomposes
Support beneficial biological activity
Mulch does not replace appropriate watering, adequate drainage, healthy soil structure, or protection from construction and other disturbances. It is one component of a broader approach to supporting soil and root health.
Think Broad, Not Deep
One of the most useful principles for mulching around trees is:
Spread mulch outward—not upward.
A broad mulch area generally provides more benefit than a small, deep ring concentrated around the trunk.
Many tree roots grow relatively close to the soil surface and can extend beyond the edge of the canopy. Expanding the mulched area allows more of the root zone to benefit from moderated soil temperatures, reduced moisture loss, decreased turf competition, and protection from repeated lawn activity.
Whenever the landscape allows:
Extend mulch across a broad portion of the root zone
Expand the mulch area beyond a small ring around the trunk
Use a moderate, relatively even layer
Prioritize width rather than excessive depth
The mulch area does not need to stop at the edge of the canopy, nor does every property need to mulch the entire root system.
The goal is to create the broadest practical area that fits the site while preserving access, drainage, landscape function, and other important uses of the property.

When mulching around a tree, width generally provides more benefit than depth. A broad, moderate layer supports more of the root zone than a small mound concentrated around the trunk.
How Deep Should Mulch Be?
For many landscape trees, a finished mulch depth of approximately 2 to 4 inches may provide soil benefits without creating an excessively deep layer.
The appropriate depth may vary depending on:
Mulch material and particle size
Existing soil conditions
Drainage
Site moisture
Existing mulch depth
How quickly the material decomposes
Finer materials may hold moisture differently than coarse wood chips. Poorly drained sites may require a more conservative approach than dry, exposed locations.
Before adding new mulch, check what is already present.
Older mulch may become partially decomposed or difficult to distinguish from the underlying soil. Adding several inches every year without evaluating the existing layer may gradually create excessive depth.
The goal is to maintain an appropriate finished depth—not to add a new layer simply because another year has passed.
Keep Mulch Away From the Trunk and Root Flare
Mulch should not be piled against the trunk.
The root flare—sometimes called the trunk flare—is the transition where the trunk widens and meets the major structural roots. On many trees, this area should be visible at or near the soil surface.
A mulch volcano is created when mulch is piled deeply around the trunk, often forming a steep mound. Although this practice is common in residential and commercial landscapes, it does not reflect the way trees naturally grow.
Excessive mulch around the trunk may:
Bury the root flare
Keep bark continuously moist
Conceal wounds, decay, or other concerns
Make inspection of the tree’s base more difficult
Encourage roots to grow upward into the mulch
Contribute to circling or girdling root development
Hide the true soil level
The problem is not that mulch is present. The problem is its placement and depth.
Mulch should be pulled back from the trunk so the bark and root flare remain visible. The finished mulch layer should resemble a broad, relatively flat ring or bed—not a cone, pyramid, or mound.
If removing surface mulch does not reveal the root flare, soil may be covering the original trunk base. Excessive planting depth, changes in soil grade, or soil added around the tree may require further evaluation.
Avoid aggressively digging around the base of a mature tree. Fine absorbing roots and larger structural roots may be close to the surface.
Do Not Cover Existing Problems With Mulch
Before adding mulch, inspect the base of the tree and surrounding soil.
Look for:
Bark damage
Cavities or decay
Fungal growth
Girdling or circling roots
Soil piled against the trunk
Existing excessive mulch
A buried or difficult-to-locate root flare
Repeated mower or string-trimmer damage
Standing water or poor drainage
Changes in soil grade
Mulch should not be used to hide existing concerns.
If a problem is present, adding more material may make future evaluation more difficult. The condition should be understood before it is covered.
Check Existing Mulch Before Adding More
Organic mulch gradually decomposes and contributes organic matter to the soil. Existing mulch does not necessarily need to be removed before new material is added.
Before adding mulch:
Check the existing depth.
Look for compacted or matted material.
Confirm that the root flare remains visible.
Make sure mulch is not piled against the trunk.
Observe whether water moves through the mulch or runs across the surface.
Evaluate soil moisture and drainage beneath the mulch.
If the existing layer is moderate, loose, and functioning appropriately, complete removal may not be necessary.
If the surface has become compacted or matted, gently loosening or redistributing the upper layer may help restore a more open structure. Avoid aggressive raking, digging, or cultivation that may damage roots near the soil surface.
If the existing mulch is already deep enough, additional material may not be needed.
Sometimes the correct amount of new mulch is none.
Choose an Appropriate Mulch Material
Organic mulch materials are generally preferred around trees because they gradually decompose and contribute organic matter to the soil.
Common materials include:
Arborist wood chips
Shredded bark
Bark chips
Aged wood-based mulch
Leaf-based organic materials
Different materials vary in appearance, particle size, decomposition rate, moisture retention, and availability.
Arborist wood chips may contain a mixture of wood, bark, twigs, and leaves. This diversity can support gradual decomposition and contribute organic material to the soil.
Fresh wood chips used as a surface mulch generally do not create the same concerns as mixing undecomposed wood deeply into the soil. Mulch should remain primarily on the soil surface rather than being tilled into the root zone.
Avoid mulch materials that:
Contain contaminants
Have been treated with harmful chemicals
Create an impermeable layer
Compact into a dense mat
Introduce unwanted plant material
The best mulch is not necessarily the most decorative or expensive. The material should support the soil, fit the landscape, and be applied appropriately.
Avoid Landscape Fabric and Plastic Beneath Mulch
Landscape fabric is sometimes installed beneath mulch to reduce weed growth. Around trees, however, it may create long-term maintenance concerns.
Over time:
Organic material may accumulate above the fabric
Weeds may begin growing in material on top of it
Roots may grow into or above the fabric
The material may become difficult to remove
Water and air movement may be affected as the fabric ages or becomes clogged
Plastic sheeting may create additional concerns by interfering with the movement of water and air into the soil and altering drainage within the root zone.
A broad layer of organic mulch placed directly over the soil may help reduce turf and weed competition without creating a permanent barrier around tree roots.
If landscape fabric is already present, removal should be approached carefully to avoid damaging roots that may have grown through or above it.
Create New Mulch Beds Without Damaging Roots
Converting turfgrass to mulch may benefit trees by reducing competition, protecting the soil, and separating the trunk from lawn equipment. However, installation should avoid unnecessary root and soil disturbance.
When creating a new mulch area:
Avoid deep excavation
Do not rototill beneath the canopy
Avoid cutting visible or shallow roots
Do not remove large amounts of soil
Avoid adding soil over existing roots
Preserve the existing soil grade
Keep edging shallow and away from major roots
Avoid equipment that may compact the root zone
Keep the root flare visible
Deep mechanical edging may create a clean visual boundary, but it may also cut roots growing near the soil surface. A clean appearance should not come at the expense of root health.
Avoid aggressively stripping soil from the root zone simply to create a recessed mulch bed.
The goal is to reduce competition and protect the soil—not damage roots while installing the mulch.
Mulch Does Not Eliminate the Need to Monitor Soil Moisture
Mulch may help reduce evaporation and moderate soil moisture, but it does not guarantee that the soil beneath it contains an appropriate amount of water.
During dry weather:
Check soil moisture beneath the mulch
Do not judge moisture only by the appearance of the surface
Water slowly enough that moisture reaches the soil
Confirm that water moves through the mulch rather than running away
Adjust watering based on rainfall, soil type, drainage, temperature, and tree condition
Mulch may remain damp while the underlying soil is dry—or appear dry while the soil beneath remains adequately moist.
During periods of excessive rainfall or poor drainage, mulch may also slow evaporation from already wet soil.
The goal is appropriate soil moisture—not simply maintaining a damp mulch layer.
Adjust the Approach to the Tree and Site
The basic principles of proper mulching remain consistent, but the needs of the tree and site may influence how mulch is used.
Newly planted trees often benefit from mulch that protects the planting area, reduces turf competition, moderates soil conditions, and separates the trunk from lawn equipment. However, the root ball should still be monitored because mulch does not eliminate the need for appropriate watering.
For newly planted trees:
Apply mulch across a broad area when possible
Maintain a moderate depth
Keep mulch away from the trunk
Preserve visibility of the root flare
Check soil moisture beneath the mulch
Mature trees may benefit from broader mulch areas that protect more of the established root zone.
For mature trees:
Prioritize width over depth
Work around visible surface roots rather than cutting them
Avoid changing the existing soil grade
Protect exposed roots from repeated mower damage
Expand the mulched area gradually when appropriate
Surface roots are a normal feature of many mature trees. They should not automatically be cut or covered with additional soil to improve the appearance of the lawn.
A broad mulch area may provide a practical way to protect surface roots while reducing repeated conflicts with turfgrass and mowing equipment.
What Property Owners Can Do
A practical mulching routine may include:
Check the existing mulch depth before adding more
Maintain approximately 2 to 4 inches when appropriate for the material and site
Spread mulch broadly rather than piling it deeply
Keep mulch away from direct contact with the trunk
Preserve a visible root flare
Avoid mulch volcanoes
Remove or redistribute excessive mulch
Gently loosen compacted surface mulch when needed
Use clean, appropriate organic mulch
Avoid plastic beneath mulch
Reconsider the need for landscape fabric
Avoid digging, tilling, or deep edging within the root zone
Check soil moisture beneath the mulch
Protect visible surface roots
Evaluate conditions at the base of the tree before covering them
Mulching does not need to be complicated.
A broad, moderate, properly placed layer is generally more beneficial than a deep, decorative mound.
When Professional Evaluation Is Useful
Professional evaluation may be appropriate when
The root flare is buried or difficult to locate
Soil has been added around the trunk
Mulch has accumulated deeply over many years
Girdling or circling roots are visible or suspected
Bark beneath the mulch appears damaged or decayed
Fungal growth is present near the base of the tree
Drainage problems or standing water occur within the root zone
Large surface roots conflict with sidewalks, driveways, mowing, or landscape plans
Significant excavation may be required to correct existing conditions
A valuable mature tree is showing signs of decline
The appropriate correction is unclear
An arborist can evaluate the tree, root flare, soil conditions, root-zone limitations, site history, and existing mulch before recommending corrective work.
A Long-Term Approach to Mulching
Proper mulching is not a one-time installation followed by automatic yearly additions.
Mulch changes over time. It decomposes, settles, moves, and gradually becomes incorporated into the soil surface. Depending on existing conditions, it may need to be redistributed, replenished—or left alone.
The condition of the existing mulch should be evaluated before new material is added.
The goal is not to maintain a freshly mulched appearance at all times.
The goal is to protect the soil, support root function, reduce avoidable disturbance, and create a more favorable growing environment around the tree.
When done correctly, mulching is a simple practice that can provide long-term benefits.
Spread mulch outward—not upward. Keep the root flare visible, protect the root zone, and allow the soil beneath the tree to continue functioning as a living system.
